My #WAACPainting Progress (Update 8)

Well, the glacially slow progress continues!

Really starting to come together now – the whites are starting to get close to a white colour coming up from blue – that last highlight was 4 parts white to 1 wolf grey.    Almost all the base colours are blocked in now (except the hair on some of the other members of the squad).  Of course, made a rookie mistake!  I need to remove the tab on the base to add them to their resin bases…. so that means sawing bits off!  Should have done that before painting, so I hope I don’t damage them too much in the process.  I rarely do models with resin bases, so this is a step I often miss!0

I’ve also been working on a banner for the ladies for the entry, though I’ll change this for a Sisters of Battle banner afterwards.  What do you think?  Matches the #WAACwear quite well 🙂

My #WAACPainting Progress (Update 4) – Finalising some choices

Well, one of the great joys of painting are the ever changing paint names, ranges and options, especially since I haven’t painted my Order of the Verdant Garden in years!  I’m also looking at following various tutorials, which all use paints from different ranges.  Now, I could just go out and buy those exact paints … except even that isn’t possible, as some of them don’t exist anymore!

What I need to do is either adapt to colours that are close enough, or use a tool to match the paints pretty exactly to ones that I actually can go out and buy!

I use a tool on my iPhone called ModelPaint42.  Its great, with a really brilliant range of paints – including Army Painter, my base colour range of choice (I have their mega set, covering their current main range).  However, it will only show direct matches – I might always end up mixing my own too.

We have several core colour areas:

  • Green Robes
  • White Armour
  • Gold Trim
  • Face – Flesh and Eyes
  • Metal weaponry and gadgets

There will probably be a few other highlights here or there, but thats the core!  We also need to prime the model, and identify shadows and highlights.

Priming and Preparing

  • White Primer
  • Army Painter Quickshade Blue Tone Ink

I’m going to spray the model white!  No surprises there, with predominantly white armour!  After the initial spray, I’m going to run a blue wash over the model to highlight details, and also act as a good starting point for the white armour.

Eyes and Face

  • whites of eyes – 4:1 mix Army Painter Warpaint Matt White, Army Painter Painter Warpaint Skeleton Bone
  • iris – Army Painter Warpaint Goblin Green
  • pupil – Army Painter Warpaint Matt Black
  • highlight – Army Painter Warpaint Matt White
  • underline (and eyebrows?) – Army Painter Warpaint Oak Brown

  • Flesh (base) – Army Painter Warpaint Barbarian Flesh
  • Flesh (layer down) – Army Painter Warpaint Tanned Flesh
  • Flesh (layer up) – 1:1 mix Army Painter Warpaint Barbarian Flesh, Army Painter Painter Warpaint Skeleton Bone
  • Flesh (warmth) – I may experiment with a warmer colour on the cheeks by adding some Army Painter Warpaint Alien Purple into the flesh mix.

I’m going to start with the eyes, as that’s what I normally screw up when painting – so I might as well start while the model is pretty much a blank slate!  I will have a go doing very detailed eyes with an iris, though I suspect this will be not good, and revert back to a simpler black on white pattern.  I’m going to use a white/bone mix for an off white – the proportions may need varying here, and if it doesn’t look good in my test, I will go for a Reaper White Leather.  I’ll be following the overall guide here.

The rest of the face will be tricky to do well.  I was looking at some of the techniques here, as the results are fabulous – but possible too feminine (looking at Lyssele).  That sounds silly, but the Adepta Sororitas are more business than make up focussed!  I may experiment with the warmer effects on the cheeks though.  There are surprisingly few guides that don’t focus on male faces, and I don’t think I need to add stubble here 🙂

Green Robes

  • Army Painter Warpaint – Matt Black
  • Army Painter Warpaint – Angel Green (base)
  • Army Painter Warpaint – Greenskin (layer 1)
  • Army Painter Warpaint – Goblin Green (layer 2)
  • Army Painter Quickshade – Green Tone Ink or Strong Tone Ink

I’ll then paint the robes black, and begin to follow the painting tutorial here.

White Armour

  • Army Painter Warpaint Matt White
  • Cold Grey Shade – 2:1:1 mix Army Painter Warpaint Matt White, Army Painter Painter Warpaint Electric Blue, Army Painter Painter Warpaint Uniform Grey
  • Model Air Gloss Varnish

I plan to paint the armour following the guide here!  After the model is matt varnished at the end, I plan to go over the white armour in a gloss varnish to make the white a little shinier, like metal.  That may or may not work for photos though.

Gold Trim

  • Army Painter Warpaint Weapon Bronze
  • Army Painter Warpaint Greedy Gold

Not a huge amount to say here!  The trim will generally be gold, painted in bronze and highlighted up to gold – possibly with a shining silver top light here or there.  I’ll be using this guide to metals where appropriate.

  • Army Painter Warpaint Gun Metal
  • Army Painter Warpaint Plate Mail
  • Army Painter Warpaint Shining Silver

Again, the primary guide will be the guide to metallics here.  There aren’t any power weapon effects necessary, so it’ll be just straight metals.

Final Touches

Well, I am tempted to try the technical paints a little – particularly the blood effect on the Narthecium.

In terms of bases, I am settling on the MDP ruined chapel bases.  The chapel idea has a strong resonance with the sisters, and the slabs also match the GW battle board I play on extremely well too.

Project scope – creep incoming!

I need test models for much of this, so I am going to expand out to do the rest of a command squad at the same time.  I need to do another three models to finish off a full squad, and that’ll let me experiment a bit with techniques before doing it for real.   Hopefully this won’t slow me down too much!

The Order of the Verdant Garden – Adepta Sororitas Codex update

The Order of the Verdant Garden was formed on the planet of Illustroma Majoris VI, in the aftermath of a tremendous conflict against a heretical rebellion.  Members of many orders of the Adeptus Sororitas headed to the planet,  but the naval ships carrying them were destroyed.  After the destruction of the rebels, the Sisters of Battle were at a loss – without naval or astropathic support, there was no way to leave the troubled world.  Joining together as a single force, the Adeptus Sororitas formed the order of the Verdant Garden, which maintained peace throughout the Illustroma Majoris system for over a thousand years before the Administratum sent a expeditionary force to check on the planet.

With such a length of tradition and roots on the world, the Ecclesiarchy granted their petition to stay as an independent order … something their founding orders do not necessarily agree with!

The Living Saint Evangeline

During the War of Sedition, Canoness Evangeline sacrificed herself to save a whole company of Adeptus Sororitas.  Sorely treated by her captors, she smiled serenely and detonated a hidden melta bomb, annihilating the rebellious command.  Over a thousand years later, she survives by the will of the Emperor, her eyes blinded to world around her, as she follows his divine guidance to aid her Sisters throughout the galaxy.

The Penitent Daughters

Some sisters lose their way, or believe that the ways of their original Orders are superior to the combined knowledge of the Order of the Verdent Garden.  These sisters are sorely chasitised, sworn to silence, and sent to the repentence abbeys.  Chaperoned in battle by Mistress Superior Demetra, they destroy all in their paths with their eviscerators.

Interactive Army Painters – Redux

I like to keep my Interactive Army Painter links up to date, as I find them just so useful as a prelude to getting actual paint on a model!

Bolter & Chainsword has an amazing set of interactive army painters available, letting you plan out a general look and feel for models before you try them. Its no substitute for trying a model or two, but does let you think about your colour choices!

The best painter is for Space Marines, unsurprisingly.  You can also get one for Space Marine Wargear, and for Scouts.  There is another one for Terminators.

For other Imperial stuff, there is one for the Imperial Guard (or Astra Militarum) and for the Sisters of Battle.

You also have Chaos Marines.

For Xenos, you have the Tau – Fire Warriors and Orks.

Games Workshop had some OK interactive painters for their old paint ranges, which are gone from their site…. but can be found on the Wayback Machine.  The B&C painters are better!

Here is their Space Marine painter, and their Imperial Guard painter.

I can’t find any active ones for Eldar, Dark Eldar, or Necrons though. One suggestion is to use the Dawn of War army designer, and take a screenshot of the outcome.

EDIT – broken painters removed.  Sadly no Eldar one is known to replace it.

Militarum Tempestus – Stormtroopers!

Well, we’re finally approaching the end of my review of my guard forces!  Its useful for me, even if its a bit boring for everyone else!

The last chunk left are the old Karskrin Stormtroopers, of which I have a reasonable amount, dating back to Witchhunter and Daemonhunter days!  Unfortunately, they are all unpainted (or at least unfinished!) .  With a couple of spare vox-caster backpacks, there is enough for 2 10 man squads and a 5 man command squad with a decent range of  special weapons!

19 Scions with Hot Shot Lasguns

3 Scions with Grenade Launchers

2 Scions with Plasma Guns

Tempestus Scions – Tempestor with Power Sword and Hotshot Laspistol, 6 with Hotshot Lasguns, Vox-Caster, Flamer, Grenade Launcher (160pts)

Astra Militarum – the odd boys and girls!

Well, in addition to the clear cadian/valhallan/vehicle split, there are a few other models that don’t fall as obviously into either section!

At the moment, I think the painted sniper and ratlings are definites to add to the other Guard combinations for 135pts.

Painted Models (210pts)

Primaris Psyker (50pts or 75pts at mastery level 2)

6 Ratlings (60pts)

Astra Militarum – the 39th Cadian (Leo’s Leathernecks)

Well, this area is my Imperial Guard shame (in a #playitpainted sense!).  I have a pretty huge number of Cadians, but very few are painted up well.  I then have a horde of primed cadians, a fair few unbuilt or in need of fixing or rebasing, and then a selection of ones that have been attempted in a range of different looks, generally unsuccessfully!  I need to work out a minimum amount to paint to get them as a feasible force with the vehicles and odds and sods!

Painted Cadians

  • 3 autocannons
  • 3 heavy bolters
  • 1 mortar
  • 2 sergeants with Chainswords
  • Vet with Shotgun
  • 17 lasguns
  • 3 grenade launchers
  • 2 flamers
  • 1 plasma gun
  • 1 banner bearer

Unfortunately, thats not really enough for even a small valid army.

Unpainted Cadians

  • 14 voxcasters
  • 60 lasguns
  • 2 snipers
  • 2 plasma guns
  • 1 grenade launcher
  • 6 flamers
  • 2 lascannons
  • 3 heavy bolters
  • 2 missile launchers
  • 1 autocannon
  • 5 sergeants with laspistols
  • 1 sergeant with bolter
  • 1 with medipack and bolt pistol
  • 2 captains with power swords
  • 2 with medipacks and lasguns
  • 1 spotter with binoculars.

Now thats a bit more like it 🙂

Odd Painted Cadians

Blue/Black Command Squad – Commander with Power Sword,Standard, meltagun, voxcaster, medipack

Red/black – flamer, 2 lasguns

Grey/Green – 2 voxcasters, 2 flamers, 2 grenade launchers, 7 lasguns, 1 sergeant

Urban camp – sergeant, 4 lasguns

Green/olive – meltagun, 2 grenade launchers, lasgun

Unassembled Cadians

An old battle force, with command squad, 2 infantry squads, 3 heavy weapon squads and a sentinel. There are a fair few odds and ends in a box marked “to be fixed”!  I have a painted old school armoured sentinel that needs to be reassembled, and the following heavy weapons teams that need to be rebased:

  • 6 x Heavy Bolters
  • 7 Missile Launchers
  • 1 Autocannon

Totalling that lot up, we have:

  • 5 autocannons
  • 12 heavy bolters
  • 9 missile launchers
  • 2 lascannons
  • 1 mortar
  • 9 sergeants with laspistol
  • 1 sergeant with bolter
  • Vet with Shotgun
  • 91 lasguns
  • 5 grenade launchers
  • 11 flamers
  • 3 plasma gun
  • 2 meltagun
  • 2 banner bearer
  • 17 voxcasters
  • 3 captains with power swords
  • 4 medipack
  • 2 snipers
  • 1 spotter with binoculars.

Astra Militarum – Imperial Guard Motor Pool

Well, continuing my look at my Imperial Guard forces, here is my guard vehicle pool!

I have a range of vehicles which I usually field with the 24th Valhallans, but work with any Guard (or Inquisition Force)!

Its not a huge motor pool (as yet, anyway, but I do like tanks 🙂 ), but offers a reasonable mix for a combined arms company.

Unassembled – 415pts

There is another armoured sentinel (40pts) – very old school – that needs to be assembled, and a Leman Russ (150pts) that needs to be patched back together.  I also have another sentinel (35pts) in an untouched Cadian battle force, a valkyrie (125 pts) (though that may go to the Tempestus or inquisition) and another Chimera (65pts).

The Astra Militarum – Revisiting the Imperial Guard (24th Valhallans – Odin’s Earthshakers)

Well, the new Imperial Guard Codex is out, and its a  bit of a mix.  I’ve only flicked through it, but it seems to contain less fluff than other 6th Ed codices, even compared to the previous Guard codex itself.  There are some more interesting combos and changes to existing units, but some weird points increases, nerfs and units dropped too.  The penal legion has been a favourite of us grognards for decades!

I’ll do a run  through on my thoughts on the codex once I’ve had a chance to have a bit of a think.  Still, it’s enough to get me looking through my Imperial Guard Forces, looking at what sort of forces I could put together.  I have predominantly 3 types of Guard models – Vehicles, Cadians and Valhallans, with a smattering of odd stuff and a small strike force of Karskrin Stormtroopers.

Lets start with the coolest army of the Imperial Guard … the Valhallans (pun intended).

Valhallans – 854pts painted – 24th Valhallans “Odin’s Earthshakers”

Although not a huge army, I do have a slew of Valhallans in a range of slightly different colours (which actually can work quite well to differentiate veteran squads for me!).  I have about 850pts of Valhallan infantry, give or take an upgrade or two! That may not sound like much, but remember that this doesn’t include any vehicles, stormtroopers, ratlings, engineers, psykers, commissars or the like – this is just pure painted Valhallan infantry – #playitpainted

Grenades and tweaks could push this up a bit!  I’d field these with the Guard vehicles I have as a combined arms force too, which would push it up the rest of the way.

Unpainted & work to do

Well, I do have a few more unpainted Valhallans – basically 4 heavy weapons teams (2 x mortars,1 x heavy bolter, 1 x auto cannon) and crew.

In addition, all the painted heavies probably should be rebased to the current size!  Most have the original two crew and weapon all based separately.
