WAAC 40K Raffle!

Well, the raffle was pretty damn successful!  We raised £1400 for MacMillan Cancer Support, and we have an extremely happy winner, Alex!  He’s looking forward to fielding some of the huge numbers of Salamanders donated and painted against his friends (who appeared to be weeping as he picked up the fully painted force with a big grin.

It was a heck of a lot of work, but tremendous fun.  I want to say thank you to all those who painted and donated.  @paintysim has been absolutely amazing, working with KR and Dark Sphere to sort out lots of support, in addition to sorting out basing parties and helping look after the Salamanders as they arrived, all on top of donating and painting loads of models. @baharipilgrim has provided a heck of a lot of support too.

@docbungle founded the whole WAAC drive, which has raised over £10,000 for MacMillan so far, and he also painted and donated a cracking squad of assault terminators, as well as some WAAC gaming templates.

@gamingking1616 was incredibly generous, donating several minis and contributing lots more time to paint up tanks and full squads donated by others too.

@nationoflee did a cracking He’Stan – with a choice of head.  I particularly loved the old school orange mohawk head!

@husker04 managed to paint and donate an Ironclad and full Vanguard assault squad despite tiny children.

@dark_eye_jay converted and painted a donated terminator librarian that looks amazing. Although the army all had snow added, no one could bring themselves to touch the masterwork base!

@vidpui, a top notch commission painter, painted up a Landspeeder that has had everyone in absolutely awe, as well as a rhino, a cracking squad of converted scouts and a full tactical squad!

@ticosminis, another cracking commission painter, painted up a donated squad of scouts and a squad of assault marines.

@elessarion30, a commision painter who focussed on Malifaux, painted up her first Space Marines with some cracking Legion of the Damned and a combat squad

@darrenbogus donated and painted an absolutely top notch chaplain and a crux terminatus badge to mark Alex as an elite veteran of 40K!

@rallyfox donated and painted a cracking librarian!  Top work, sir!

@dornstemplar donated a full 6 man combat squad to run rampant in a cracking razorback!

@ryglore donated and painted a brilliant Ironclad, with a complete range of options!

@Rekeiji donated a full space marine codex, so Alex has everything he needs to play.  Very generous donation at very short notice!

@Tolsenti donated and painted a complete devastator squad.  The incredibly filthy set of 4 multimelta’s all had brilliant heat effects on the barrels that has had viewers dribbling!

@SpectralRaziel has donated and painted tanks, flyers and monster centurions.  Its an amazing amount of stuff!

Its been both hellish and a tremendous privilege helping to sort this out!  I’m glad its been a success, and thanks so much to all those who donated for raffle tickets.  Cracking work from all of you!

Salamanders – Updates and New Codex Points!

If you want to enter the raffle (until the end of July 2015) go here:

https://www.justgiving.com/WAAC-40K-Salamanders

This is an updated post with finalised donations and an idea of the new codex points values, together with completed photos wherever possible!  Please note the bases have been updated from the individual photos for a unified snow theme!

Bar a few models still to arrive or be finished, these are all currently either with me, @paintysim or on display in Dark Sphere in London!  Any models not ready to be shipped are not in bold in the list below, as we can’t guarantee the arrival of donations, though we’re pretty confident of these judging by the WIP pics!  I’m still finishing off my own pledge!  Naughty Kipper!

Dark Sphere have been fantastic!  They have donated  KR cases to hold the entire army, and raffle tickets can be picked up from them in store.  The draw will be held in store so people can see it in person on Sunday August 2nd.

@Rekeiji has tremendously generously donated a brand new Adeptus Astartes codex, so the army will come with everything you need to field the force as well as store it!

This list can obviously be tweaked a bit by adding relics, downgrading veteran sergeants to veterans and so on, and formation bonuses can change points costs, but the total is looking like 4022pts if you took the options below!  Thats a fantastic prize!

Salamanders Update #WAAC #40Kraffle

A new update page using the new codex can be found here:

7th Ed Codex update!

It has a close to final list of all the minis you could win, updated pictures and more.

UPDATE:  @docbungle somewhat pre-empted it and publicised the Just Giving page for the #WAAC #40Kraffle!  If you want to participate to win this awesome force, head over to

Note that the donations go straight to MacMillan via JustGiving- we don’t handle it at all!

UPDATE 2:  All the points in this list so far are still based on the old codex.  Its not been long 🙂  With the number of tac squads and marines, I think it’d actually be possibly to break it up into 2 valid demi-companies and command for a brutal list!

@PaintySim has done amazing things sorting out a basing day and additional donations – if you have any questions or want to get involved, feel free to harass her if you can’t get hold of me! 😀

Painting Salamanders (#WAAC #40KRaffle)

I thought I’d post up a useful guide to painting Salamanders, based on some of the cracking work by @SpectralRaziel and @GamingKing1616.  I’ll try to keep this up to date with any suggestions on painting Salamanders flesh, vehicles and alternative paint range choices too, and maybe for drake scales and flame effects as we go on too.

With the current GW Paint Range, the recommendation is:

  1. Basecoat with the Caliban Green Base
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Layer with Warpstone Glow.
  4. Edge with Moot Green

It gets an overall result like this, which I think you’ll agree really pops! (pic by @spectralraziel)  More layering and blending could be done, but if we all stick to roughly that spectrum it’ll match very nicely.

20150326_143750000_iOS

@GamingKing1616 has been using the older GW paint range, and has achieved some excellent results by:

  1. Basecoating with Dark Angels Green
  2. Layering with Snot Green
  3. Washing with Nuln Oil
  4. Layering back with with Snot Green.
  5. Highlight with Goblin Green

Though a final edge highlight with maybe Moot green would match it up nicely! (Pics from @gamingking1616)

Painting Salamanders Skin

@GamingKing1616 has had some amazing results painting the skin with Rhinox hide and some mournfang brown highlights.  Red eyes, of course, and hair in black with some gentle grey highlights or dry brush.  I thoroughly recommend something similar (even though the grognard in me thinks fondly back to the orange haired rogue trader Salamanders!

The #40K #WAAC Raffle

Well, I’m looking at sorting out a #WAAC Army raffle for 40K. In line with the MacMillan theme, I’m suggesting we do Salamanders!  The green colour is appropriate, as is the fact that Salamanders care more for humanity than most in 40K!

In terms of the raffle, I’d see it probably being a £5 donation to #WAAC for a single entry – multiple entries per person allowed.  I’d obviously be ineligble as the organiser, but those donating models or painting could certainly enter!  If entering from outside the UK, we’d probably need to arrange something to cover shipping costs – its not cheap to ship an army.

I’ll keep this page updated with a proposed army list and participants as we get volunteers and proposed donations.  I’m also suggesting we be pretty flexible with adding options – add some Legion of the Damned with green spectral flames, or a small Biel-tan allied contingent because you have some spare Eldar?  All cool!  Don’t like normal marines, but love heresy models?  A stern guard squad in old mark armour would be cool. I’m based in the UK, so I suspect donations or painting offers from too far afield aren’t likely to be practical.  Don’t worry if the proposed donation would break the force org – while I’d like it to be a complete valid army, with data slates, additional force orgs, and the like, we can probably make something work.

I have snapped up a few extra minis for the £5 #WAAC challenge that I’m happy to donate here, and an old marine battle force I can donate a squad of two from if there aren’t any other donations.

You can contact me on twitter as @evilkipper or through the comments on this page!

Suggested Painting Scheme

Heck, all the volunteers so far are far better than me, so I’m reluctant to tell anyone how to do their job.

The only think that I think would be worth following is a fairly consistent basing – @PaintySim has suggested maybe going unpainted bases and doing a basing party at Dark Sphere?  Any londoners up for that on 1st weekend in July?

Salamanders are obviously in green with black skin tones where appropriate.  Use of white as a spot colour for the MacMillan theme is recommended.  @SpectralRaziel has done some test models, and a Caliban Green Base, Warpstone Glow Layer and Moot Green edge highlights is looking pretty damn amazing, especially with some Nuln Oil to add depth.  With older paints, @gamingking1616 has had a lot of success with old Goblin Green and Skarsnik Green – might need a moot green edge highlight equivalent to match it up.  Take a look at this post for what various test paints have come up with.  As new techniques and recommendations come up they’ll be added there.

If you’d like to volunteer something outside of the Salamanders, like legion of the damned, think how you could get the green theme in.  In the case of LotD, green spectral fire?  For Eldar allies, maybe Biel-Tan colours?

An introduction to the #warmongers twitter people!

Hi!  This is a little presumptuous, as there are many, many hobbyists who have been involved much longer than I have, contribute more, and certainly paint and play more frequently.  Of late, though, I have been asked about the #warmongers on Twitter more than once, and thought it’d be nice to be able to point people at an introduction.

Basically, the #warmongers are an eclectic group of gamers and painters covering many tabletop war-games and skirmish systems who chat on twitter.  The use of the #warmongers hash tag in a tweet marks it for the attention of those interested – and it will then be automatically retweeted by the Warmongerin Bot (@tabletopbot)

The group doesn’t have any set guidelines and isn’t always PG-13 in all its discussions, so you may want to pick and choose who to actively follow!  Think about your online stance – if you swear a lot, you will limit your audience.  If you talk a lot about non-hobby interests, you may lose followers who aren’t interested in things like politics.  I’m not saying don’t do those things – just if you want to participate enthusiastically with the widest range of gamers you’ll need to be pretty tolerant and keep pretty hobby focussed.

There are two regular points of interaction through the week.  On Mondays, people post pictures of their recently completed minis with the tag #miniaturemonday – less prolific hobbyists like myself will often post up an older completed model instead, but it’s really aimed at showcasing your recent work.  If you can be inspired to show new models every week, its great!

Every Wednesday, people post pictures of their current work in progress with the tag #wipwednesday – this is a great way to look at everyones big projects, and get inspired to push forward.  Its also great for highlighting techniques people are using, and I’ve learnt a lot from some of the great painters out there.

While not specific to the #warmongers, you do also see a lot of suggestions as to who to follow for great hobby tweets on a Friday, with the hash tag #followfriday – its a great way to build a great twitter feed that’s brilliantly tailored for hobby.

There are some other twitter tags sometimes used by those with more specific interests in the hobby field.  I’ve seen some people who love ForgeWorld models posting on fridays as #fwofriday (Forge World Only Friday), or #forgeworldfriday.  I’ve also seen pictures of hobby scenery posted on a tuesday as #terraintuesday, or thursday as #terrainthursday,  Don’t look at #tanktuesday though – it overlaps with beer and sports so heavily there’s nothing directly hobby there!

There is also an charity drive for gamers that the warmongers get involved in – Warmongers All Against Cancer, which uses the #waac or #waac2015 hashtags, with some variants for specific events.  The charity drive is for MacMillan Nurses.

Finally, its not uncommon to tag a tweet with the relevant game system – so if its a malifaux question, people would tag it #malifaux.  For an Infinity tweet, #infinitythegame.  40K and WFB tend to vary – #40K is often used for space, but I’ve seen #W40K, #WH40K and  #warhammer40K used as well, for example.

Most people posting under the #warmongers tag are great anyway, but there are a few key people who are particularly helpful or knowledgable:

@docbungle is the driving force behind #waac, takes part in a regular gaming podcast called flock and awe, and blogs on Mini Musing of a Bear.  He’s a nice chap, and knows a heck of a lot about a lot of systems, from #infinitythegame through 40K and WFB to #malifaux.

@2Screens and @wartrader are massively enthusiastic about #infinitythegame, and are always helpful and encouraging to people wanting to get into the game or find online resources.

@oldmanmyke and @joel__henry are great starting points if you love #malifaux.  They know the game and the scene inside out.

@FrankAFord is a fabulously friendly chap who finds some of the best painted models on the internet, and posts them up.  If you love painting, you really should start by following him.

Beyond that, just try following a few people or searching for the hash tags mentioned, and try following people where you see interesting tweets.  Following and unfollowing is just the click of a button, so experiment – and if your posts are full of hobby fun, people will start to follow you back too.

I hope that’s useful!  I’m @evilkipper over on Twitter, by the way 🙂

Hobby Plans For February!

Well, Its February already, and my #HobbyADD is already thoroughly derailing my New Year’s Resolutions!

My key goal this month is to paint Lylyth for the Legions of Everblight Warmahordes raffle for #WAAC.  Its a great way to contribute – it encourages me to paint to my best, and the raffle raised over £500 last year.

I also want to make progress on my Silver Skulls and Imperial Fists forces.  I’d like to get these to a point where I can field around 1850 pts, which will be enough to let me feel I have a finished force for now.   I don’t think that’ll happen for both of these by the end of Feb, but I’d like to get at least one there,

Outside of that, my main goals are sorting my model hordes out, as I have further Ork reinforcements arriving, and possibly some other stuff too!  I also have increasingly large numbers of new models for my Blood Angels – I think my older stuff thats cribbed together from eBay models and still not properly painted needs to meet the smelting pools of dettol for a cleanse!  I also need to update my standard lists to the 7th Ed standards for some armies like my Necrons!

I also hope to get in some X-Wing, and I might get a cheeky game of 40K in with Saint Aidan if I pop up to Sheffield later in the month. 🙂

My 2014 from a gaming perspective!

Well, 2014 is almost at an end, and it hasn’t been terribly successful in terms of actually getting in many games, or actually getting much hobby done!  There were many grand plans for the year … and few of them have come together.  Next year needs to be a touch more realistic, I feel!

I still have plastic mountains of models that need to be assembled and painted!  If anything, the plastic mountain has grown significantly, with Orky enthusiasm.  None of my armies have actually reached the state I wanted to class as finished (with the possible exception of the Ultramarines!)  Though I’ve loved reading about Malifaux and Infinity, I haven’t painted my starting forces or played even a single game.  I do have a complete starter force for Retribution of Scyrah in Warmachine, but not managed to get that going either (though I am loving Warmachine Tactics on the laptop).  My major passion in 40K has been Orks for the last couple of months, and I’ve been gathering and planning an Ork Waargh (though that’s being somewhat derailed by the brilliant Blood Angels models being released right now, and enthusiasm for Silver Skulls!)

What has gone well?  #WAAC 2014 was amazing fun, with events around the country, and I’ve ended up with an brilliant range of gaming gear, from T-shirts, to dice, through to templates.  I painted some models that I think came out really, really well, and won a great book and a pro painting of my Bonesinger by Peter (@minimodelpaint), which is coming on amazingly well!  I’ve tried playing X-Wing, and absolutely loved it.

I’ve loved interacting with (and meeting some of) the #warmongers.  Twitter has been a brilliant hobby outlet for me, and that’s definitely going to continue!

I’ve got some brilliant hobby resources, with brilliant brushes from Gears & Games and Army Painter really making a difference, a full Army Painter set of paints in decent paint racks letting me dip in and out of painting to do little bits here and there around the demands of being a Dad – demands that are going to increase in 2015 with the arrival of another one in May! 🙂

I haven’t played much Xbox 360 for various logistical reasons over the year, but did manage to sneak in some Transformers and Halo, and completed Injustice!  I’m hoping I’ll get more video games in next year, with an Xbox One arriving for Xmas … Halo!  Destiny!  Titanfall!  There’s some amazing games coming out for the PC just now too – Satellite Reign as a long awaited “Syndicate” style game this week.  Elite Dangerous looks amazing, and comes out this week!  As mentioned, Warmachine Tactics is great.

I’d like to have reported much more hobby fun … but its been a cracking year.  I’ll try to follow this with my plans for 2015, and maybe write a summary of what I think the biggest changes have been in the hobby world in general.

My #WAACPainting Progress (Update 9)

Welcome to the continuing adventure of #WAACPainting, as I try to master new techniques to paint the best models I can!   Please do check out WAAC – its a fantastic campaign organised by @DocBungle to raise money for McMillan.

This is the 9th update, and pretty much the last for the core models themselves.  I need to do a banner and rebase them, but the painting?  Done … and I’m pretty happy.

Here we have the finished shots.  The hair has been done in matt black, with a 3 part black, one part bone dry brush highlight for the hair effect.  The weapons and metal are done in gun metal, with a black wash and a light sliver drybrush.  The robes highlighted up to Ork green look great.  A devlan mud wash over the gold and parchment has worked really well.

I may still add a little technical paint blood to the hospitallars surgery tools though 🙂

Next come the bases, banner, and then the joys of rebasing.  Totally messed up in terms of prep – I should have prepared the models for rebasing before painting!  Silly Kipper!  I also need to work out how to take some really nice photos.  Use the battle board?  Downloaded and printed backdrops?  Simple white or grey?  Its all new 🙂
